Hunab Ku
Hunab Ku is a term that means “The One God” or “The Only God” in Yucatec Maya, a language spoken by the Maya people of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico1 The term is used in colonial and doctrinal texts, especially in the Book of Chilam Balam of Chumayel, a collection of prophecies and historical accounts written by the Maya after the Spanish conquest.
Hunab Ku is often represented by a symbol that consists of a square divided into four parts, with a circle in the center. The symbol is sometimes called the “Maya Galactic Butterfly” or the “Galactic Cross”. The symbol is said to represent the unity of opposites, the balance of duality, the harmony of the cosmos, and the source of all life. The symbol is also associated with the concept of movement and measure, which is the meaning of the word “hunab” in Maya.
